Methodology III

A sequential, child-developmental approach to vocal music pedagogy for children in grades 5
and 6 is presented.  Teachers continue the study, begun in Methodology I and Methodology
II, of the philosophy and practices inspired by Zoltán Kodály and the principles of Music
Learning Theory developed through the research of Dr. Edwin Gordon.  Participants will
learn to plan and teach a curriculum for grades 5 and 6, based on folk and art music, that
leads children to musicianship and musical literacy.  Teachers will learn techniques for
developing in their students skills in vocal development, in-tune singing, rhythm, movable-
do solfa, absolute pitches, ear training, inner hearing, dictation, musical memory,
improvisation, part work, music notation and reading, and applying solfa and absolute pitch
skills to playing keyboard instruments.

Materials III - First Segment: Analysis, Songs & Games

During the first daily segment of this course, participants will collect and learn American
folk songs, art songs, singing games, play parties, and dances that support the methodology
for grades 5 and 6.  They will analyze, and add to their retrieval systems, songs for these
grade levels.  Students will have access to the computer lab and to lap-top computers in the
classroom, and will have the option of notating the songs for their retrieval systems using
the
Finale music writing program.

Materials III - Second Segment: Banjo

During the second daily segment of Materials III, participants will learn basic principles of
playing and accompanying children's singing on the 5-string banjo.  (During Orientation
Weekend, students will build and string their own 5-string banjos.  Students must provide
their own straps.)

Solfa III
Gabrielle Dietrich        2 credits        Daily       1:00 p.m. - 2:15 p.m.

This course continues, on a more advanced level, the work begun in Solfa I and Solfa II to
develop the participants' personal musicianship and their ability to use the pedagogical tools
of movable-
do solfa and rhythm syllables.  Included are skills in sight singing, ear training,
inner hearing, dictation, musical memory, improvisation, and part work.

Choral Studies III - First Segment: Choir

Choral Studies III consists of one hour of
Choir (daily) and one hour of Conducting III (3
days per week).  During the
Choir segment of Choral Studies, students will engage in choral
singing leading to a performance at the concluding concert of the institute.  Repertoire will
include choral masterpieces from all periods, arrangements of folk music of various styles,
and recent compositions.  Studies will include interpretation, musical style, principles of
choral singing, and application of solfa in learning new music.

Choral Studies III - Second Segment: Conducting III

During the Conducting segment of Choral Studies III, participants will develop and practice
strategies for presenting new choral music to children's choirs, develop and implement a
rehearsal flow chart, practice advanced conduting techniques, and apply to choral texts the
International Phonetic Alphabet.
