KODÁLY MASTER'S DEGREE PROGRAM

The Kodály master's degree program consists of four levels of Music Education, Musicianship, and
Education courses.  Students who require a brush-up in sight singing and ear training skills take a
one-credit prep course called Solfa Fundamentals during the Special Studies Week immediately
preceding Level I.

Students in Levels I - III take four core courses (9 credits):

Solfa (Sight Singing & Ear Training) - 2 credits at each level
Kodály Methodology - 2 credits at each level
Kodály Materials (Songs & Games, Folk Instruments, Retrieval System) - 3 credits at each level
Choral Studies (Conducting & Choir) - 2 credits at each level

All master's degree courses run for three weeks during the month of July.  Students generally
complete their four levels during four consecutive summers.  Students receive their Kodály
certification following successful completion of Level III, and their master's degree following
successful completion of Level IV.

The Kodály master's degree program requires a full schedule of classes during the day in addition to
several hours of practice and homework in the evening and on the weekends.  It is essential that
students clear their schedules of other activities while participating in the summer institute.
Students who live more than thirty minutes away from the Loyola College campus are strongly
advised to stay in residence hall housing during the program.

Former AKI Kodaly Certication Program Students

Students who completed courses in AKI's former three-summer Kodály Certification Program have
the option of being "grandfathered" into the Kodály Master's Degree program.  All courses that
were taken for graduate credit will be applied to the master's degree.  Any courses that were taken
for MSDE in-service credit must be retaken for graduate credit.
